Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
