19 of Medvedev's 21 championships have been earned on hardcourt

A resurgent Medvedev won his first championship for over two years with success over Corentin Moutet in the Almaty Open title decider.

The Russian, a former top-ranked player, has endured a challenging season, achieving just a single victory at the Grand Slams and undergoing a setback at the New York tournament.

Medvedev's varied form on the tennis tour - and issues with his service game in especial - led to him falling of the world's top 10 and eventually parting ways with long-time mentor Gilles Cervara.

Presently training with Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, he has steadily progressed in the recent weeks - culminating in a tightly fought competitive victory over opponent Moutet.

This represents Medvedev's maiden championship following the Rome competition and initial on a hard court from March of 2023.

The win also indicates he has achieved twenty-one victories at 21 distinct events.

"This marks the first occasion I have attended a tournament with my two daughters simultaneously, so to win a title is really nice," commented tennis professional Daniil Medvedev.

"This title is in honour of my second daughter my daughter, because the initial championship I got when my child Alisa was born was for her."

The athlete, the 2021 US Open champion, had lost his last six championship matches, including in the German tournament previously this season.

Medvedev's defensive play style and recurring outbursts on court had led observers to doubt if his ability to play at the highest level was finished.

Yet the player has made changes in the last few weeks, striving to approach the net and play positively, supported by an enhanced serving game.

The champion came back from a break down in the first set against the tricky Moutet, winning four of the last five games to gain the advantage.

Both players traded break points in the middle set before the challenger, attempting for his first ATP Tour victory, seized the initiative to create a third set.

Moutet defended 4 initial opportunities in a close final set before Medvedev secured a break to that score to close out the victory.

Appropriately, Medvedev secured the win with a shot at the net area, with his opponent failing to handle a volley after two hours and 38 minutes.
