Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The Philippines has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and displaced over a million residents.

Officials stated that the powerful weather system caused extensive sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, prompting the relocation of millions of residents across the country.

Extensive Damage and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, emergency crews documented floodwaters reaching the tops of houses and homes washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team saved fourteen people who were trapped atop a house surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. “A father also called in panic, reporting the roof of his house was about to be ripped off by the wind. We rescued him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, authorities confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and another killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The intense storm was downgraded to a severe tropical storm early Monday while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

Per the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency stated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit just days after another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing had to be suspended on Sunday due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

Global warming is making cyclones more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Scientists have found that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has risen by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

Global assessments indicate that intense storms result in an average of US$3.5 million in losses for the Philippines annually.

The nation’s leader declared a state of emergency last week because of the severe damage from the prior typhoon and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
