Pat Cummins has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.
Australia's selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's historic rivalry.
Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.
Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.
He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of participating.
"It's clear that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations around that, not only the back issue, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.
"It's positive. There's strong faith that he will feature a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll reassess."
Past Concerns
Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.
Previous incidents include of back injuries, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.
He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the Ashes.
Bailey noted that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the opener.
Alternative Arrangements
Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.
Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against India as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.
He labeled it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."
"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.
"His involvement was limited to the starting games anyway. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for another day, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
