British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of access tunnels down to the site... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces involved in this strike for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among numerous UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove militants who threaten our way of life, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
