A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's key government projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The president confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a notable expansion of its role in public works. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, beating forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised significant apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This pause was proposed until the completion of a full safety audit. The party stated that the situation "calls for immediate answers."
In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in full accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national initiatives.
